Chapter Eight

Gunner drove around the unsavory parts of New Orleans while I navigated. I couldn’t pinpoint Greg still it wasn’t me so much as interference from Eli.

“Let’s try that shelter,” I said and pointed.

Gunner parked the car and we exited. As we walked inside, we got a few funny looks from me shuffling into line.

I glanced around for a familiar feel.

“Food is over here,” said an older gentleman.

“Thanks, we’re looking for the person in charge,” I replied.

“Sister Francis Anne over there.” He pointed to an older woman in street clothes.

“Thanks.” I headed over and waited for her to finish speaking to some men.

“Men only, there’s a women’s shelter two blocks east.” The sister nodded to the door.

“She’s a nun?” Gunner asked.

“My order is about outreach so we dress to be part of the population.” She touched the small pin on her collar that signified her order. “Jeans and a polo shirt or a full habit, same vows. What can I do for you?”

“Sister, I’m looking for a friend of mine. He had some trouble and couldn’t handle some things going on. We’ve been looking for him for months. He has friends, family, and a home to go to. We’re trying to find him to get him help. There’s no reason he should be taking up space in a shelter. Do you mind if we look around?” I asked.

She eyed me and Gunner. “What you need to understand is that a lot of these men have relatives out there. Some walked away from a home and a job. Some had medical issues or one bad break and didn’t want to take their families down into bankruptcy or homelessness with them. We don’t judge anyone who needs to stay here.”

“We didn’t mean to sound judgy. He has family that’s worried and have the resources to help him.” Gunner shrugged. “Men, we can be proud however this guy is a former priest and he might be ministering to people, helping or doing his version of penance. That’s cool, we just want to know he’s safe and not running from anything.”

“A former priest?” The nun frowned.

“It’s not a joke. Greg Delacroix. Do you mind if we look around and just see if he’s here?” I asked.

She nodded. “Ten minutes and you’re out or I’ll put you to work.”

“We don’t mind helping out,” Gunner said.

She gave him a cutting stare that took me right back to Catholic school.

“Volunteers need to be background checked and vetted before being trained. Whenever I try to joke, no one gets it.” The nun sighed.

I smiled. “He’s a former police officer, if that helps.”

“Unless he has a badge now, it doesn’t.” She shook her head. “Donations are welcome from anyone, of course.”

Opening my purse, I pulled out the emergency hundred I kept behind my back up credit card and handed it to her.

“God bless. Ten minutes.” She went back to directing the men.

We walked around toward the back where I’d seen the men’s sleeping area in my vision.

“She was rude,” Gunner said.
